Wexford Honey Festival will be staged in Johnstown Castle, with partnership with South Wexford Beekeepers Association.
There will be information stands for visitors to learn more about the importance of bees and biodiversity as well as stalls with Wexford beekeepers showcasing their delicious products. There will also be some demonstrations, talks, walks and fun activities for children.
Native Irish Black Bee
Johnstown Castle, Estate, Museum and Gardens, in the heart of Ireland’s Ancient East and an internationally significant centre of food science research, is a perfect location for Ireland’s bee festival. Wexford has a rich culinary heritage and is known as the Model County for its exceptional farming and food heritage dating back thousands of years, with beekeeping one of the links to its celebrated Norman past.
The native Irish Black Bee is the last remaining genetically pure native honey bee in Northern Europe, and researchers are considering the bee to repopulate the continent. The wild native Irish black bee hives at Johnstown originated in the battlements of the castle, and are part of a national scientific study into the management of Irish native black bees without any pesticides.

Johnstown Castle will also be using the weekend to declare the Estate a Conservation Area for the native Irish black bee which is thriving in wild colonies on the Estate. The scheme is administered by NIHBS (the Native Irish Honey Bee Society) and will ensure that no other non-native strains of honeybee can be introduced to the Estate.

The event runs from 10.30am to 4pm on both days. There is no need to book for the event. Free to annual members. Usual admission rates apply for non-members.
